Douglas is a well preserved "Michigan lumber village" established in the middle 1880s as a port for schooners and steamships carrying lumber, leather and fruit to Chicago and elsewhere in the Great Lakes area. Retaining its original quaint charm and character, Douglas is now home to first class lodging, restaurants, recreation, shipping and cultural opportunities. Sharing much of its appeal and history with the adjacent town of Saugatuck, the town is nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan and the Kalamazoo River.
